Today we are celebrating a guy who gets it done!  Running the school that is!  That's right! We are celebrating Mr. Howes, our fearless leader, because this month is National Principal's Month!

Each October, National Principals Month recognizes the important role that principals play in making a school great. Principals are one of the hardest working, yet often least recognized individuals in education.

Principals set the academic tone for their schools, and it is their vision, dedication, and determination that provide the mobilizing force for achieving student success. Each October, we seek to honor these unsung heroes for their tireless efforts in pursuit of excellence in education.

And especially, to say thank you to our very own Mr. Howes for making our school so great!

If you signed up for VPA, check your school email by Monday of next week for your placement!  It will include the dates and times you will meet for VPA!  If you signed up, but did not receive an email, contact Mrs. Schumacher!

Don't forget that 7th and 8th grade girls basketball and wrestling begin on Monday. Make sure you get your physical on file so you can participate.

LEAP activities are happening this month!!!!  There is bakeology with Ms. Lukens and Ms. Schroeder every Wednesday and Thursday through March!  Students will be able to make yummy treats while making some fun do it yourself projects!

And if you're really into baking and cooking, then you can sign to join Ms. Lobianco and Mrs. Redfern every Monday and Tuesday through December 12 to make some great recipes that are perfect for the teenage life!

Also happening soon, on November 2nd and 3rd, you can come and learn about el Dio de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. We will learn more about this special day that originates from Mexico and other Latin American countries. Students will make sugar skull luminaries, a decorative banner, and color pages while watching the film Coco.

Students, remember that parent-teacher-student conferences are coming up next week. Be sure to attend virtually with your parents.

And since it's conference time, it is also Book Fair time! This year's book fair is virtual, but you still have a chance to win a prize!  During home base you'll receive a flyer with the fair information as well as a wish list. When the fair opens, go to the website, and look at all the great books. Fill out a wish list for the book fair, take a picture of it and send that picture to one of the librarians via email.  We'll put your name in a drawing to win great prizes. Don't forget to give the wish list to your parents!

Happy birthday this weekend to Keana Williams on Saturday and Barrett Reed on Sunday!

And speaking of prizes, the following students are prize winners already for showing their Wash Values!  Congratulations to Gabrielle Brunsman, Wyatt Rhodas, Ava Jenaman, Taylor Gukeisen, Seattle Bontemps and Bela Nanenga!  You will be contacted about receiving your prize!

And now let's take a closer look at the man who leads George Washington Middle school to greatness every day…Mr. Howe's!  We decided to do a hard hitting interview and when we asked for volunteers, Mrs. Hefel jumped at the chance to ask the tough questions!  Check out the interview here: https://vimeo.com/471217215/6cab1a201d

Thanks again Mr. Howes for all you do for us!

7th and 8th grade students, you have received an email link to sign up for wrestling and girls’ basketball. The plan is to start practices the week of October 26 and competitions for both sports would start the week of November 16. The seasons would conclude on December 18th. Students will attend practice on their in-person learning day, and online students would be assigned a day for their practice.

Similar to the school day, we will be implementing health and safety guidelines during our sports seasons to include:

· Social distancing when possible

· Wearing masks during identified times

· Washing and sanitizing hands frequently

All students need to have a complete physical packet on file at school before they can participate in any sports. Packets can be turned into the main office at any time during the school year. Sports physicals are valid for 13 months from the date of the examination; however, the health intake and concussion forms must be completed each school year. Packets are available in the main office or can be found online under the ATHLETICS tab on the Washington homepage.

Students who had their physicals signed on or after July 1, 2019 have received a one-time extension making them valid through December 31, 2020. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Hefel at ehefel@dbqschools.org

Here’s a friendly reminder that you must wear your picture ID above the waist every day!  If you do not have it, you must get a sticker from your first period teacher.  Also if you are going to be absent or late, make sure to have a parent call the attendance office as soon as possible!

Happy birthday to Alex Burke, Emma Chesterman, and Kelsie Budde on Wednesday, and to Peyton Gothard and Jordan Plummer on Thursday!

Monday, October 5 & Tuesday, October 6, 2020

Today we want to pay tribute to our custodial staff who work tirelessly to clean and maintain our building. We want to show these fellow Wahawks that all they do is recognized and appreciated. If you see a custodian today, say thanks, or if you want, write them a note thanking them for making our school such a nice place in which to learn!  You can drop the notes off with Mrs. Schumacher in the LRC and she will get them to the custodial staff!

Don't forget that MAP testing is happening this week!  Wednesday, Oct 7 - Hybrid A will take the Reading test and on Thursday, Oct 8 - Hybrid B students will take the Reading test.

Fully online students can sign up to take the MAP reading and math tests on Monday, October 5th at 4PM or Tuesday, October 6th at 8AM. Contact Lorilee Hamel at lhamel@dbqschools.org to sign up.

Make an effort to get a good night's sleep before testing. Try to a get a minimum of 8 hours, but shoot for 9-10.  Set your alarm for a little earlier so you are not rushed in the morning and have plenty of time to eat a good breakfast.

It is very important that you bring your laptops fully charged to school each day but especially important on MAP testing days. Please make sure you plug your laptop in before you go to bed so it's fully charged for testing.

Students, please remember to treat your laptop with care. When transporting it to and from school in your bookbag or laptop case, please power off the device. If you have younger brothers or sisters or pets at home, make sure you set your laptop out of reach when you aren't using it. And please be careful not to eat or drink over the laptop. You can prevent accidents by keep all food and drink socially distanced from your laptop.

LEAP homework help starts Monday October 5th. Every Monday through Friday from 2:35-4:00pm.  Students should meet in the south cafeteria immediately after school to sign in and get a quick snack provided by LEAP.  This year Mrs. Rothert will work with 6th graders and Mr. Murphy with 7th and 8th graders.

Space is limited to 9 students per classroom.

We've extended the sign-up for VPA so if that interests you, head to the Wash website and click the link that says click here to sign up.  It's on the homepage under reminders.  Also, if you are inerested in helping out with tech crew for VPA, those sign-ups will happen later in the year!  Keep watching WTV for announcement regarding crew opportunities!

We missed a few birthdays over the long weekend and we wanted to say happy belated birthday to Saanvi Ram, Seattle Bontemps, Isaac Gooch, Walker Newt, and Treyton Orange who celebrated already and to Payton Atchison and Laura Feller on Monday and to Tanner Bush on Tuesday! We are glad you were born!

And now for the thought of the day: Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Thank your custodians today!
