It is Friday, January 15th, and on
Monday we will be celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day! We do not have school on Monday due to this
historic Day, so we are highlighting it today! Each year on the third Monday in
January, we celebrate his birthday. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist
minister and social activist who played a key role in the American civil rights
movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968.
On October 14, 1964, King received
the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolence. In
1965, he helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches, and the following
year he took the movement north to work on segregated housing. In 1968, King was planning a national campaign
in Washington when he was assassinated on April 4th, but his dream of equality
lives on and we celebrate his life and work each year in January.
So when you're off school on
Monday enjoying your freedom, remember to think about the man who dedicated his
life to making this country free for everyone!
